Activity report

R&D Detectors department presentation

Missions

The reflexion on the development of the studies in detection led to the creation, in October 1996, of the department "Recherche et Développement Détecteurs" (R&D Detection). This department implements detectors, focusing on the following aspects:

  • the reinforcement of the dialogue between the engineers and the physicists
  • the confrontation, in a same place, of complementary competences in the fields of detection, mechanics and electronics.

Fields of activity

The principal works and the future orientations are related to gas detectors (wire chambers, parallel plate avalanche chamber, micro-pattern gas detectors, ionization chambers) and photodetection (scintillators, photomultipliers, bases, calibration, etc.). The focus is put on the mechanics (feasibility studies, structural analyses, manufacturing drawings, assembly, tests of mechanical behaviour) with integration of the implantation of the electronic circuits. Detector studies, simulations and tests are also undertaken along with the associated analog electronics: biasing (high voltage), preamplifiers, signal processing.

Organization

Currently, the Detector Department is composed of six sets:
