Recent work by the Tokyo group has shown that tensor forces have a dramatic influence on the single particle levels of exotic nuclei. Several years ago Stancu, Brink and Flocard found a simple way of studying the effects of the tensor force in the framework of Skyrme's effective interaction. It is a method which might be useful in the future. For example it suggests that the influence of the tensor force is larger in closed shell nuclei with N not equal to Z.
